Soil Testing

A soil test is required for every residential development for the purpose of obtaining a Building Permit. It is needed to determine the soil profile in the area of the proposed construction. Once the profile has been determined, three bore holes are drilled in an approximate position of where the proposed dwelling is to be located.

The site is then classified in accordance with Australian Standard 2870. A suitable foundation system and founding depths can then be recommended for the proposed dwelling.

Drainage Design

Designing an effective irrigation or drainage system is more than just drawing a plan of sprinkler positions and calculating drainage pipe sizes.

The designer’s job is to weigh up the options for the specific irrigation or drainage requirements and decide on the cost efficiency and then design the system.

In general there are two main steps in this design process.

Determine the design requirements - the water and drainage requirements, environmental impact, water conservation and water quality parameters are estimated for the specific situation. It is important to have an understanding of different irrigation and drainage systems to enable the most appropriate design to be achieved.

The system is designed and specifications prepared - that takes into account such things as water source, pipe selection, aesthetics, cost, efficiency etc. Much of this work involves a good working knowledge of hydraulic calculations.

A third aspect of design is the ability to undertake simple site surveys to establish some of the design criteria.

This involves:
Basic surveying techniques.
Interpretation of topographical maps for contours and fixtures.
Carry out or commission detailed soil surveys and interpret the results.
